Vanessa NielsonVanessa Nielson, the owner and president of Interior Reflections, is a California native, having grown up in the East Bay Area.  She was born the fourth of eight children, and from her early years, Vanessa was drawn to all things relating to home and family.  Due to her unique life experiences growing up in a large family she was learning key skills for success long before beginning her business.  Skills like the art of compromise and negotiation, living within a budget, and creative thinking were basic “survival skills” and have proven critical to her current success in working with couples and families.

On the strength of a BS degree in Home Economics Education, Vanessa began her career teaching Interior Design, and was awarded the Outstanding Contribution to the Profession Award from Brigham Young University.  She went on to earn an MS degree from the University of SF in Organization Development.  So with one BS and one MS degree in hand, she decided to take the plunge and start her own business.  It is the application of her talent and education that creates a smooth and enjoyable design process.

Vanessa is the former President of the Interior Design Society Bay Area Chapter, the co-founder and former president of Business Success Team and the owner of The Design Suite, a design cooperative in Walnut Creek.

 Design Philosophy

Vanessa’s design philosophy can be summarized with two great quotes.

The first is from Jane Austen.  She said, “There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.” At Interior Reflections, we believe that you should find comfort in going home; in fact we hope that home is the one spot that you can find complete peace and joy.  We know that comfort means something different for each client, and if you haven’t achieved that yet, we would love to help!  We thrive on helping people, and we work hard to ensure an outcome that produces a big smile…and sometimes even a big hug.

The second quote is by John Ruskin.  He said, “When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece.”  We have worked very hard to hone our skills for the benefit our clients. From design trends to business management we attend conferences, monthly product knowledge meetings, and build relationships with knowledgeable industry professionals in order to refine our skill set and stay current while maintaining our certifications.  We love working with people and we love design.  We love the creative challenge of designing something completely unique and personal for each new client, and once we get the thumbs up…we consider that a masterpiece.

Community Outreach

I consider it a privilege to introduce and participate in the efforts of a local non-profit organization, Pillars of Hope, Inc.  The mission of Pillars of Hope, Inc is to combat the darkness of modern day slavery, also known as human trafficking.  Many of us think that human trafficking only happens in “other countries” not realizing how close to home it really is. The goal is to raise an awareness of the Human Trafficking industry and to provide housing and restoration services to women and child victims of human trafficking, regardless of race or religious beliefs.

“At Pillars of Hope, Inc. we want to make a difference in the lives of these survivors. The reality of returning them to society, to be able to fulfill their purpose in life, is not only our dream but our mission.”

I am pleased to participate in their efforts to create a comfortable, restorative home for the victims of this horrible crime.  There are a multitude of ways that you can help too!  Specifically, we are in need of gently used furniture and home décor items.  If you are so inclined, we would gratefully accept your tax-deductible donation.
